Let’s talk about protection! No, not that type of protection...SPF protection!
When left bare and unprotected, UV rays cause serious damage to the outer layer of your skin. That's why wearing an SPF is one of the best steps you can take to maintain your skin's health.
So, what is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and is followed by a number to indicate how long your sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet rays (UV rays).
Prolonged sun exposure can lead to dark spots, wrinkles, sagging, and not to mention, skin cancer. But by simply using a daily SPF of 15, you can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by 40%, and lower your Melanoma risk by 50% (Richard, E. G. (2021). And if that’s not enough to convince you to add SPF to your morning routine, keep reading.
Fortunately for makeup lovers, SPF protection can be found in more than just your typical sunscreen. Many cosmetic companies have multi-purpose products designed to tackle multiple skin concerns at once, including UV protection! Whether it’s primers, foundations, or tinted moisturizers, there are plenty of makeup products to choose from that make great additions (or swaps) to your current routine. Trust me, your skin will thank you for the added protection.
Now, I say “added protection,” because, while it’s great that this type of makeup is available, they’re often not strong enough to prevent sun damage on their own. According to The American Academy of Dermatology, “The best type of sunscreen is the one you will use again and again. Just make sure it offers broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection, has an SPF of 30 or higher, and is water-resistant.”
So when shopping for makeup with SPF, make sure you’re paying attention to labels. An SPF of 15 or higher is great, especially when paired with a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Together, these products provide an impressive shield against harmful UV rays.
